Several parts of the new health care law are starting to take effect and others will begin to over the next few years. But if you don’t know what’s changed, you may miss out on benefits your family could use.
In fact, you may be surprised to find out that your children, folks with pre-existing conditions and others who couldn’t afford the care they needed, can now get it. Making sure you have all the facts will help your family stay covered and stay well.
Here are just a few current changes that you should be aware of:
- Expanded coverage for young adults: If your kids aren’t covered by health insurance, they can stay on your plan until they turn 26 (effective 9/23/2010, some insurers are already allowing this, check with your provider).
- $250 Medicare drug cost rebate: 4 million seniors can look forward to a $250 rebate for a coverage gap in medicare
- Providing free preventive services: All plans must cover mammograms and colonoscopies without charging a copay, deductible, etc.
- Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plans: People with pre-existing conditions or who are uninsured at least six months can get this coverage through a state or federal high-risk pool.
