It may not seem like a big deal, but even the smallest mistake can lead to tax troubles. Sometimes it’s as simple as one number off or a missing signature. But, big or small, these tax mistakes can delay your refund and cause a serious (avoidable) headache.
So, make sure you have everything you need to file your taxes and give them a double or triple check to avoid these common mistakes:
- Not signing or dating your return
- Selecting the wrong filing status (single, married filing jointly, etc.)
- Including the wrong social security number or ITIN, or not including one at all
- Not waiting for all of your tax forms (1099, W2, etc.) and estimating your taxes
- Simple math errors
- Using the wrong tax table for your tax bracket
- Sending your return to the wrong address – if you’re filing a paper return use the peel off sticker if you can
- Using the wrong banking information for your refund. See how to find your routing and account numbers.
- Miscalculating your EITC – avoid this one with MyTaxBack
- Not including or miscalculating the Making Work Pay Credit
Of course, having an extra pair of eyes can help prevent some of these common tax mistakes. Why take your chances? File your state and federal taxes online or in person for Free at MyFreeTaxes.com.
